Tom Cruise’s rep confirms divorce from Katie Holmes

People magazine broke the story that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are heading for divorce, citing a statement from Holmes’s lawyer for confirmation.

Now a rep for Tom Cruise has confirmed the split to Celebritology, and notes that it was instigated by Holmes.

“Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and concentrating on his three children,” Amanda Lundberg, his publicist, said in an e-mail this afternoon. “Please allow them their privacy to work this out.”

As noted earlier in the blog, Holmes, 33, and Cruise, who turns 50 on Tuesday, married in 2006 and have a six-year-old daughter, Suri Cruise, together. The marriage was Holmes’s first and Cruise’s third; he was married to Mimi Rogers for nearly three years (they divorced in 1990) and to Nicole Kidman, whom he divorced in 2001, for 11 years.

Cruise and Kidman have two children together: Isabella and Connor.
