Maya Rudolph will return to “Saturday Night Live” this weekend to host the show, as Jimmy Fallon and many a cast member of yore has done before her.
The “Up All Night” star is in fine comedic form in the newly released promos for the show. Alongside Andy Samberg, Rudolph opens a time capsule containing an old sandwich, wears too many pairs of sunglasses and talks to a flying shark. (See the video below.)
The timing of Rudolph’s hosting gig a pretty eerie coincidence, considering she’s known for her over the top impression of Whitney Houston, who died unexpectedly last weekend. (The same thing happened to “Glee.”) TVLine reports that “SNL” is indeed considering having the actress do the impression. NBC would not confirm this.
I don’t doubt that there’s some moving, tasteful way for “SNL” and Rudolph to salute Houston. (Last week’s show, hosted by Zooey Deschanel the day Houston died, briefly flashed a picture of singer in a ‘90s sketch with Mary Katherine Gallagher.) But considering Houston’s funeral will be held (and broadcast for the world to see) on Saturday, it seems in bad taste.
Are you excited to see Rudolph return to “SNL?” Are you hoping that Melissa McCarthy will show up and there will be a big “Bridesmaids” reunion? Can you imagine a way for Rudolph to do her Houston impression in a tasteful way? Tell us in the comments.
