Zooey Deschanel and Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie separate

Zooey Deschanel and her husband, Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard, have separated.

Us Weekly got confirmation from the “New Girl” star’s rep that the couple — who married in September of 2009 — has called it quits.

The split between the singers — in addition to her acting, Deschanel also croons as one-half of the indie-folk duo She and Him — was reportedly mutual and amicable.

Unlike the Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries divorce, this is a severed celebrity relationship that we didn’t see coming and that makes us genuinely a little sad. Between this and the Thurston Moore/Kim Gordon split, we’re beginning to lose our faith in indie-rock marriages.
