Link: NSO plays Mackey

In Friday’s Washington Post: Josefowicz, Lintu offer a thoughtful program with the NSO.

I’m not sure my pop-music reference is going to be clear in the context of this review: I meant that to write a piece “about” something is a more familiar trope in pop music than it is in classical music (program music notwithstanding). Do you agree?

The composer Steven Mackey talks about the real-life inspiration for another of his non-abstract concertos, “Stumble to Grace.” “Beautiful Passing,” which the NSO played last night, was about the death of his mother.

Edited to add: Charles T. Downeyoffers another view of the same concert on Ionarts.
