Links: Two Orpheuses heard in DC region

“Orphee” at the Virginia Opera demonstrated, above all, just what a fine composer Philip Glass is, and was a bold step for a company that hasn’t done anything like this in the past: I reviewed Friday night’s performance.

Tom Huizenga reviewed another Orpheus: the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, in residence at the University of Maryland, with the pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet.

Robert Battey saw promise, and flaws, in the young cellist Sol Gabetta, whom he found was outplayed by her accompanist, Alessio Bax, in her DC recital debut at the Kennedy Center.

Cecelia Porter checked out the vocal sextet Nordic Voices at Dumbarton Church.

What performances did you see this weekend?
