Press releases we never finished reading

This one is lame even by mainstream PR standards. Here’s the start of a press bio for a crossover singer whose new album, please forgive me for contributing at all to any hype surrounding him, comes out tomorrow.

“Having mastered the technique of singing long ago, Nathan Pacheco could go toe-to-toe with the finest operatic tenors. But for Nathan, technique is, well, just a technicality, a tool for conveying emotion. “

Clearly, Pacheco’s handlers are setting himself up as a welcome contrast to opera singers, who, as well all know, view technique as an end in itself, and make a point of singing without any emotion whatsoever. (Ha.)

But aren’t you all relieved that there’s a singer out there who has mastered the technique of singing? Finally.

Let’s give him a listen. (The music starts at 2:08.)

Above: Technically, the allegation is true: here is Nathan Pacheco going toe-to-toe with one of the finest operatic tenors (Franco Corelli) in a selection that Pacheco’s website identifies as “Nessum dorma” [sic]. The press bio doesn’t say anything about who might come out on top.
