Add another orchestra to the list of American orchestras with labor troubles: the San Francisco Symphony’s strike has led to the cancellation of their upcoming East Coast tour — including a scheduled date at the Kennedy Center on Saturday the 23rd. The Washington Performing Arts Society informs us that ticket-holders can either trade in tickets for a future WPAS show or get a full refund.
For those keeping score at home, both the Minnesota Orchestra and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra have been locked out since October; while the Indianapolis and Atlanta Symphony Orchestras both had lockouts in the fall that were ultimately (if tenuously) resolved. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra, of course, is in recovery mode after a strike wiped out a good chunk of its 2011-12 season. This does not add up to a very pretty picture of a smallish field.
Above: Another place and time: the San Francisco Symphony celebrated its 100th anniversary last season with a reiteration of its American Mavericks festival, which it brought to Carnegie Hall. This season in Washington it was offering something rather different: Saturday’s now-cancelled performance would have featured Mahler’s 9th Symphony.
