The weekend ahead, music theater edition

For fans of music(al) theater, there are two performances of note in the DC area this weekend.

Still in its maiden season, the Repertory Opera Theater of Washington is offering “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci” in Alexandria, this weekend and next. Joan Reinthaler thought that the company’s “Don Giovanni” last fall was very strong.

And tonight and tomorrow, Young Artists of America, a new non-profit instrumental and vocal ensemble that aims to make up for the growing dearth of music education in this country’s schools, is offering a full-scale youth production of Andrew Lloyd Webbers’s “Phantomof the Opera,” with a cast including more than 150 kids from all over the Washington area. Performances are at 7:30 at Winston Churchill High School in Potomac, MD.

Feel free to post reviews of either event.
