Benoit & Sergio on listening to their standout track “Everybody” for seven hours straight

It’s okay. We listen to your songs for seven hours, too, guys. (Photo courtesy of Benoit & Sergio)
Ever want to listen to a song over and over (and over and over and over)? For Benoit & Sergio, the excellent Washington-born dance music duo I profiled in today’s Post, it’s actually part of their songwriting process.

Read the profile here, listen to their standout track “Everybody” below, and scroll down to check out what Benjamin Myers, a.k.a. Sergio, had to say about how that song came together.

How did you write a song like “Everybody?”

It was almost a Frankenstein of a track. In the middle there’s that house-y organ that fades in. I had that sitting around from just goofing around on Christma vacation at home on headphones. We really loved that hook but it took a year and a half before it made it into that track. Then the “Everybody” vocals we had just been jamming one day and we recorded them. And we thought, ‘What if we could put that organ with these vocals?’ So once those those elements came together, and once the bassline was dropped, it was like, ‘OK, this is the mega-bomb, now!’

And you knew that right away?

We played it on a loop for, not kidding, like, seven hours.

Wow. It’s like you were you putting the song to some kind of endurance test?

I think that’s the way to do it. If you never get tired of it there’s something to it. If we find ourselves getting tired of a loop, we know it’s not there. I’m still not tired of that “Everybody” hook... If you don't tire of something, there’s something compelling about it. And other people aren't going to tire of it either.
