R.I.P. punk trailblazer Poly Styrene and singer-songwriter Phoebe Snow; Lollapalooza announces lineup

- Poly Styrene, one of punk rock’s first female stars as lead singer of the band X-Ray Spex, passed away at the age of 53. She announced in February that she was suffering from breast cancer. Her role as frontwoman for a first wave British punk band made her one of the scene’s most influential figures. The Guardian has a story and appreciation.

- Singer-songwriter Phoebe Snow , who was nominated for a best new artist award at the 1975 Grammys, passed away at the age of 60 due to complications from a brain hemorrhage she suffered in 2010. She was best known for her 1975 hit “Poetry Man.”

- The Lollapalooza lineup is out and it’s got a handful of big names, if none too exciting. Eminem, Foo Fighters, Muse, Coldplay, My Morning Jacket ... yep, that’s a festival. A hundred or so other bands are playing the Aug. 6-8 mega-festival in Chicago, including Big Audio Dynamite, Ellie Goulding, Wye Oak, Ryan Leslie, the Kills and many more.
