Gerard Smith, the bassist for acclaimed art-rock group TV on the Radio, passed away Wednesday morning at the age of 34. The band shared the sad news on its Web site. It was announced just last month that Smith had been diagnosed with lung cancer and was undergoing treatment.

Smith performed on the band’s just-released album, “Nine Types of Light,” but was sitting out a current tour that started nearly two weeks ago. TV on the Radio has canceled its next scheduled five shows.
