Twelfth Naval Academy midshipman expelled in ‘spice’ case

A twelfth midshipman has been separated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis for use or possession of synthetic marijuana or “Spice,” academy officials said.

The Navy Times reports the midshipman is a sophomore and the first woman separated from the academy in the ongoing investigation.

Spice has become a major problem in the military, its leaders have said, because of its quasi-legal status and undetectability in required drug tests. Synthetic marijuana is banned in the military.
