(NOTE: This gallery was updated with additional cartoons Friday afternoon.)
In the days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, cartoonists turned to many of the same iconic images: a mournful Statue of Liberty. A single-teardropped American eagle. And then increasingly, soul-girding artwork to reflect America's resolve, spirit and sense of unity. Many of the illustrations still retain a certain poignancy as first-draft testaments to the national, and international, tragedy.
Today, upon the eighth anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, here's a small gallery of some of our favorite 9/11 cartoon remembrances. After which, Comic Riffs feels compelled to pause, reflect -- and take a few moments of silence. Thank you, artists, for tapping what, sometimes, mere words cannot convey.
