John Lennon always had a way with a line. And today, with its latest featured "doodle," Google pays tribute to the late rock legend, who would have turned 70 tomorrow.
Like the search-page static artwork, Google's 32-second animation -- set to his song "Imagine" -- features the former Beatle's own illustration. In the doodle, the "o's" in "Google" were represented by Lennon's own cartooned self-portrait. Update: American users can now view the animation on Google's main search page, too; the new image features a "play" button.
Among numerous events tied to his 70th birthday, three of Lennon's "unseen" sketches went on display in SoHo. And the feature film "Nowhere Boy" -- about Lennon's Liverpool adolescence -- has its American debut this weekend.
Lennon's cartoons and his other artwork have been exhibited in galleries for years, thanks largely to the guiding hand of his widow, Yoko Ono, who herself won acclaim as a Fluxus movement artist before meeting Lennon.
Ono, 77, reportedly was in Iceland on Friday for the re-lighting of the Imagine Peace Tower, which she unveiled three years ago in memory of Lennon "to symbolize wisdom, healing and joy."
"I think I am getting over it in a kind of way, in my own unique way, but it's still lingering," she told Reuters of Lennon's 1980 death.
The most recent "Google Doodles" celebrated national days in Germany and China. Google recently received much attention with its "doodle" that promoted its new real-time search engine.
