As with any proper holiday, we seem to have a theme. Yes, my fellow patriots, if the holiday be Independence Day, the satirical angle of choice this year is: What civil liberties don't we have?
Here are four political cartoons that remind us of what we've lost or may lose. Suddenly, I have the urge to flaunt my independence, even if that means exercising my inalienable rights to eat odd meats (thanks a lot, "Agnes"), watch blottoed citizens play perilously with firecrackers and rip that pesky little tag off my good ol' American mattress, fineprinted law be damned. What's that -- the mattress was made in China?
Where's Lee Greenwood when you need 'im?
So the Official 'Riffs Poll of the Day: Which of these four Fourth-themed cartoons do you hold to be most self-evidently clever? This being a truly democratic blog, you've invited to vote below. Often.
'JOHN COLE' (cagle.com)
'JOHN DARKOW' (cagle.com)
'JIM DAY' (cagle.com)
'MARSHALL RAMSEY' (cagle.com)
