BOX OFFICE: Pixar's 'Toy Story 3' dominates weekend with $110M debut [UPDATED]

MONDAY UPDATE: "Toy Story 3" got a million-dollar boost from Monday's final weekend box-office numbers. The third film in the Pixar trilogy grossed $110.3-million domestically, holding its spot as the second biggest animated debut ever and the biggest June debut ever.

Thanks in no small part to great buzz, Woody and Buzz had a big record-setting weekend at the domestic box office.

Pixar Disney's "Toy Story 3" made $109-million in its domestic debut to easily win the weekend, becoming the 11th straight Pixar film to open at No. 1, according to studio estimates released Sunday.

"Toy Story 3" had the second biggest opening ever for an animated film, edging "Shrek 2" ($108-million), according to boxofficemojo.com. That tally could change Monday, when final figures are scheduled to be released. "Shrek the Third" still holds the record with more than $121-million.

If "TS3" holds at or above $109-million come Monday, it also will officially become the biggest June debut ever. "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" has held the June record with $108.9-million.

"Toy Story 3" is the first Pixar film to crack the $100-million mark, boosted significantly by the power of the 3D ticket price, which reportedly adds nearly a 20 percent bump to every $100-million made. The film opened at more than 4,000 theaters and on more than 2,000 3D screens. The previous record for a Pixar opening was "The Incredibles" at $70.4-million; several Pixar films, however, clock in at roughly $90-million in "adjusted" box office.

On Friday, "Toy Story 3" also set the record for biggest opening day for an animated film, grossing $41-million domestically.

"Toy Story 3" is the third animated film ever to debut with a $100-million weekend. (It's worth noting, by the way, that this year's "Alice in Wonderland" [$116-million] doesn't make the cut as "animated," even though it and "Avatar" have significantly blurred the lines between animation and live action.)

"TS3" also reportedly marks IMAX's biggest animated movie ever (making $8.4 million on 180 screens) and the biggest debut ever for a G-rated film.

The big opening also speaks to the long-lasting affection for the Toy Story characters; it had been 11 years since a Toy Story film was released. "Toy Story 3" was almost universally acclaimed, with only a couple of detracting critics, sparking a reaction on RottenTomatoes.com comment threads.

Elsewhere, the DC comic-book adaptation "Jonah Hex" -- in which Josh Brolin plays the Western bounty hunter -- opened lame, making a mere $5.1 million in its debut, well below even its studio's admitted predictions. (How long till some PhotoShop-happy moviegoer also mashes up the year's two biggest expectation-defying flops for the dreadfully delightful: "Hex and the City 2"?)

Other notables: "The Karate Kid" was second at $29-million; "Shrek Forever After" ($5.5M) was fifth; "Iron Man 2" ($2.7M) was ninth, and "Markmaduke" ($2.65 million) was 10th, reports Variety.
