For its debut weekend, at least, "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" has "bob-ombed" at the box office.
Edgar Wright's inventive film based on the Bryan Lee O'Malley graphic-novel series has a great pedigree and a passionate fanbase and much critical praise and fresh San Diego Comic-Con buzz.
All that, however, was not enough to KO the biggest "ex" of all: "The Expendables" -- the weekend box-office champ directed by and starring Sylvester Stallone.
"Scott Pilgrim" was fifth for the weekend, grossing a disappointing $10.5-million, according to studio estimates. The film, starring the waifish Michael Cera (whom many fans of the books didn't quite see as Scott Pilgrim), must now hope it can do better before August ends -- either that or hope for a "Kick Ass"-like life on DVD and Blu-Ray.
"The Expendables," starring Stallone and a slew of other "former" action stars, grossed $35-million to beat Ryan Murphy's "Eat Pray Love" ($23.7-million) starring Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem.
Stallone has already tossed out the idea of an "Expendables" sequel. Wright, on the other hand, reportedly had turned down other projects in hopes of a "Pilgrim" sequel -- now, barring a sharp reversal of fortune, the "Shaun of the Dead" director can cross that off his docket.
And between "Scott Pilgrim" and the flopping "Charlie St. Cloud," Universal is taking a beating this summer, with two films starring 22-year-old lead actors trying to fully graduate from teen stardom.
