Two of the artists in the running for cartooning’s Oscar — “Cul de Sac’s” Richard Thompson and Disney’s Glen Keane — are now up for the National Cartoonists Society’s division awards as well, the NCS has announced.
Thompson will compete in the Newspaper Comic Strip category against “Red and Rover’s” Brian Bassett, as well as Jeff Parker and Steve Kelley, creators of the newcomer comic “Dustin.”
Keane, the animation director on the hit film “Tangled,” will go up against a trio of “How to Train Your Dragon” talent — directors Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders and character designer Nicolas Marlet — in the Feature Animation category.
Both Keane and Thompson are nominated for the big Reuben Award, as is “Pearls Before Swine” creator. Stephan Pastis. (You can read all their reactions here and here.)
The nominees in the Newspaper Panel category are Doug Bratton (“Pop Culture Shock Therapy”), Chad Carpenter (“Tundra”) and Glenn McCoy (“Flying McCoys”).
Nominated in the Editorial Cartoons division are Creators’ Bob Gorrell and Mike Lester of the Rome (Ga.) News-Tribune, as well as the Indianapolis Star’s Gary Varvel, who this month won the Grambs Aronson Award for Cartooning With a Conscience, for his illustrated reportage series — “The Path to Hope” — about the toll of financial hardship in his community.
Lester is also nominated in the Book Illustration division for drawing “The Butt Book”; the category’s other nominees are Sandra Boynton (“Amazing Cows,” the cover of which harks back to comics’ Golden Age) and Jared Lee (“The 3 Wise Guys”).
The other double nominees are Anton Emdin (Advertising Illustration and Magazine Feature/Illustration) and Dave Whamond (Advertising Illustration and Newspaper Illustration).
The Comic Books nominees are Stan Sakai (“Usagi Yojimbo”), Chris Samnee (“Thor the Mighty Avenger”) and Jill Thompson (“Beasts of Burden”). Nominated for Graphic Novels are Darwyn Cooke (“The Outfit”), Joyce Farmer (“Special Exits”) and James Sturm (“Market Day).
The 65th annual Reuben Awards will be Memorial Day weekend in Boston.
