Dazzling new ‘AVENGERS’ trailer hits the Web

.

So many stars. So many superheroes. So much Spandex.

And so many swell Robert Downey Jr. line-deliveries in mere minutes.

The new, high-detonating “Avengers” trailer has hit the Web today — which also happens to be the 98th birthday of “Captain America” co-creator Joe Simon (you can check out our new Q&A with the birthday boy here).

The Marvel film — directed and co-written by “geek god” Joss Whedon (too many non-”Buffy” credits to list) — is due out next May.

In this “Avengers,” S.H.I.E.L.D. recruits RDJ’s Iron Man, as well as Cap (Chris Evans) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth). And of course: Scarlett Johansson is Black Widow, Jeremy Renner is Hawkeye, Samuel L. Jackson is Nick Fury and Mark Ruffalo is the Hulk.

The trailer conveys both the internal and external threats for the supergroup, from the moment it opens with the voice of Loki (Tom Hiddleston) saying with menace: “You were made to be ruled.”

Cap and Thor spar in the woods. Iron Man and nearly everybody trade barbs in the office. And we get just a glimpse of Bruce Banner turning into “an enormous green rage monster.”

Talk about the power of assembly. Let the avenging begin.
