HARVEY AWARDS: Darwyn Cooke, ‘Gutters’ & Universal lead nominations

Darwyn Cooke, “Gutters” and Universal Uclick are among the leading nominees for the 2011 Harvey Awards, which will be presented next month at the Baltimore Comic-Con.

The Harvey Awards announced the final ballot for the comic and sequential-art honors, which are nominated and voted upon by comics industry pros.

Cooke is nominated for Best Cartoonist for “Richard Stark’s Parker: The Outfit”; in that category, he’ll compete against Jaime Hernandez (“Love and Rockets”), Jeff Lemire (“Sweet Tooth”), Bryan Lee O’Malley (“Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour”) and Jeff Smith (“RASL”).

Cooke also got a nod for Best Artist, as did Dean Haspiel (“Cuba: My Revolution”), Brian Hurtt (“Sixth Gun”), Ed Ryzowski (“Gutters”) and Chris Samnee (“Thor: The Mighty Avenger).

Those last three works also received attention for Best Writer for Cullen Bunn (“Sixth Gun”), Roger Langridge (“Thor”) and Ryan Sohmer (“Gutters”); the other nominees in that category are Joshua Hale Fiaklov (“Echoes”) and Mark Waid (“Irredeemable”).

Cooke’s other nominations include Best Letterer, Best Cover Artist and Special Award for Excellence in Presentation.

The other nods for “Gutters” include Best New Series, Best Online Comics Work, Best Colorist (Ryzowski) and Special Award for Humor in Comics.

The other nominees for Best New Series are “American Vampire,” ”Echoes,” “Kill Shakespeare,” “Sixth Gun” and “Thor”; and the other nominees for Best Online Work are “Guns of Shadow Valley,” “Hark! A Vagrant,” “La Morte Sisters” and “PvP.”

Universal Uclick (formerly Universal Press Syndicate) dominated the Syndicated Strip/Panel category with “Cul de Sac” (Richard Thompson), “Doonesbury” (Garry Trudeau), “Non Sequitur” (Wiley Miller) and “Tom the Dancing Bug” (Ruben Bolling). The fifth nominee is King’s “Mutts” (Patrick McDonnell).

The ballots are due Aug. 6.

“PvP” creator Scott Kurtz will emcee the Aug. 20 awards ceremony.
