KICKSTARTING THE COMICS: From D.C. to San Diego, here are today’s picks

NOT HAVING an established annual comics convention in Washington, D.C. — in 2013 — was a bit like the District lacking a major sports team:

Baffling, bordering on the ridiculous.

This year, fortunately, organizer Ben Penrod headed up the debut of Awesome Con DC — and the reported turnout of more than 7,000 fans to the Washington Convention Center was proof-positive that the comics appetite is strong in the nation’s capital.

With that strong launch to build on, Penrod is eyeing how to make the event bigger and better in 2014. And toward that end, he’s kicked off an Awesome Con DC Kickstarter with the stated goal of $50,000. (About a week into the one-month campaign, donors have pledged more than $17,000.)

“Our plan is to bring you the biggest show this area has ever seen, on April 19-20, 2014,” writes Penrod in his appeal especially to D.C-area denizens. ”Over 100,000 square feet of exhibitors, artists, comic pros, and celebrities. More than twenty rooms of programming, and since we're not some huge corporate behemoth, we can keep ticket prices reasonable.”

Among the confirmed guests for the 2014 Con are George Pérez, Ben Templesmith, Steve Conley, Curls Studio, the Super Art Fight crew and The Post’s “Carolyn Hax” cartoonist, Nick Galifianakis.

Here’s Penrod’s engaging spiel:

AND WITH just hours to go, Comic Riffs encourages fans of Batton Lash’s great Wolff & Byrd comics to check out his project to publish ”The Werewolf of New York.” Lash’s Kickstarter campaign has doubled its $7,000 goal, but more donations mean even a bigger offering from the adventures of Supernatural Law.

Here’s the lycanthropic lowdown from Lash himself:
