NATIONAL BOOK FESTIVAL 2013: Poster creator Suzy Lee wanted to reflect ‘everything you can do with books’

SUZY LEE knew what she was going for when she took on the Washington assignment. In summoning a rich array of flora and fauna and vibrant color, she wanted the reader to feel one thing:

Warmth.

“I wanted to create a poster that can make you smile — the warm feeling that we all know when we have a wonderful book on our lap,” says Lee, a children’s illustrator (“Wave, “Shadow” and “Open This Little Book”) who created the official poster for this year’s National Book Festival.

“All the words associated with the poster are fun: festival, joy of reading, children, tree of books, a forest library, lots of colors, lot of animals. . . .,” says Lee, who studied painting at Seoul National University and book arts at Camberwell College of Arts in London. “Then those words and images are all connected together and realized.”

At the festival, Lee will speak in the Children’s pavilion on Sept. 22 at 2 p.m.
