NEWSPAPER CUTS: Florida editorial cartoonist ED GAMBLE is laid off

Veteran political cartoonist Ed Gamble has lost his job at the Florida Times-Union, the newspaper reported Wednesday.

Gamble's part-time position was eliminated as the Times-Union laid off 26 employees, or roughly 6 percent of its workforce, the paper said.

Gamble, a Tennessee native, was the Jackonsville newspaper's editorial cartoonist for more than a quarter-century. The cartoonist had won numerous regional awards and authored the books "You Get Two For the Price of One" (1996) and "A Cartoon History of the Reagan Years" (1988).

The cartoonist knows as well as anyone the challenges and changes in newspapering. According to his longtime syndicate, King Features, Gamble "has printer's ink in his blood -- his grandfather, great-uncle, mother, three uncles, twin brother and several cousins all work or worked in publishing."

Morris Publishing Group, which owns the Times-Union, emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in March, the paper said.
