QUICK HIT: Tantalizing pix from Pixar's canceled film 'NEWT'

(images courtesy of Disney Pixar)

Here's the newt we'll now never see in motion.

For two years, of course, we heard word of Disney/Pixar's "Newt," the tale of two blue-footed amphibians that was due in 2012. Then the announcement came in May that "Newt" was suddenly canceled, scuttled -- this after reportedly being postponed as the studio's "Cars 2" and "Brave" were re-slotted.

On a Disney/Pixar Facebook page over the weekend, however, some of the project's "concept art" was posted with the beguiling explanation: " 'Newt' is no longer in development at Pixar. However, that doesn't mean we can't share some of the Pixar artists' amazing artwork with our Facebook fans!"

Talk about your teases. Pixar is renowned for its willingless to dump months of work if it's deemed not up to studio snuff. The art is so alluring, yet we've heard no official word on why "Newt" was ruled extinct. We can only imagine what Gary Rydstrom -- who directed the pre-"Ratatouille" animated short "Lifted" -- had in store for his endangered little critters.

To see the dozens of images that Pixar just released, here's a link to the Facebook page.
