VALENTINE’S DAY CAPTION CONTEST: And the winner is...

HUNDREDS turned out. Five were chosen. And one emerged the victor.

On Valentine’s Day, Comic Riffs announced its second Valentine’s Day Caption Contest, featuring an illustration by Carolyn Hax column artist Nick Galifianakis.

The challenge: Write a caption for the artist’s frog-and-the-princess scenario.

The art that launched many a caption. (Illustration by NICK GALIFIANAKIS - .)

By the dozens, entries came in that referenced magical wishes, fractured fairy-tales and even his Purple ex-hieroglyph himself, Prince.

And speaking of princes: Valiantly, “Cul de Sac” and “Richard’s Poor Almanac” creator Richard Thompson waded through the hundreds of reader captions. From those, he whittled the submissions down to five finalists. They were:

“You may think I want you to kiss me, but I'm really after the fruit flies in your headband.”

— Entered by extrapolitan

“I have several thousand tadpoles from a previous relationship. They are always going to be a big part of my life. I need to know that when I tell them, ‘Me castle es su castle’ that you're on board with that?”

— Entered by Cyiam

“Sure, it's all romance now. But pretty soon you'll be telling me I can't eat flies in bed.”

— Entered by majm34

“I dunno, you seem like the type to throw this back in my face after you get fat.”

— Entered by Zach Wagner

“No weirder than your last date, I'm guessing.”

— Entered by N'ann Harp

From those five, Galifianakis handpicked his favorite. And the winning caption is:

WINNER: “I have several thousand tadpoles from a previous relationship. They are always going to be a big part of my life. I need to know that when I tell them, ‘Me castle es su castle’ that you're on board with that?”

Congratulations, Cyiam! You not only win the second ‘Riffs V-Day Caption Contest — you will also receive a signed print of the illustration signed by Mr. Galifianakis himself.

But that’s not all. As a cartoonist, Galifianakis also has an expert ear for writing pithy, punchy captions. So in this case, as a bonus, he offers a writing tip, too.

As clever as the caption is, its writer, Galifianakis says, “became intoxicated with the flow of their own verbosity.”

“So, just like enjoying a beer with a pal but then snatching the car keys before they get behind the wheel,” he continues, “I choose to [spotlight the best] part of this caption:

‘I have several thousand tadpoles from a previous relationship.’ “

Advice and an autograph! Our thanks to Mssrs. Galifianakis and Thompson, as well as to all the entrants.

(And Cyiam: You may contact Comic Riffs to set up receiving your autographed illustration.)
