2 dead, 2 injured in crash that closed Beltway

Two people were killed and two were seriously injured in a multiple-car crash Tuesday morning that resulted in the closure of the inner loop of the Beltway — and, briefly, the outer loop — near Ritchie Marlboro Road in Forestville, fire officials said.

Traffic is now getting by on both the inner and outer loops following the 6:30 a.m. crash, but the inner loop was closed for more than four hours.

The two injured victims were transported to a hospital, Brady said.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, but Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley said it involved six vehicles.

“It started in the outer loop and ended up in the inner loop,” Shipley said.

TV footage from the scene showed a handful of badly damaged cars spread across the inner loop.

A driver was also taken into custody at the scene for driving under the influence, but Shipley said the person “doesn’t appear to be the cause of the crash.”

No additional details were immediately available. Stay with PostLocal as the story develops and see Dr. Gridlock for the latest on traffic conditions in the area.
