Single-vehicle crashes in Huntingtown claimed the lives of two Maryland men in recent days, Calvert County authorities said Monday.
County sheriff’s deputies responding to the scene of a crash on Cox Road found Jonathan R. Smither, 34, of St. Leonard dead near his motorcycle just before 8 p.m. at the side of the road, the sheriff’s office said.
He was taken to a hospital, where he died, according to authorities.
Shortly after 10 a.m. Sunday, sheriff’s deputies arrived in the 100 block of Dalrymple Road to find a car that had ended up in an embankment against a tree with its airbags deployed.
The driver, Kevin E. Holland, 54, of Prince Frederick was unconscious behind the wheel, authorities said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities continue to investigate both crashes. They said Holland may have suffered a mechanical emergency that caused him to lose control of his car; Smither failed to take a left turn safely, according to authorities.
