Prison for Md. man in fatal shooting over property dispute

CUMBERLAND, Md. — A western Maryland man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for a fatal shooting stemming from a property line dispute.

Seventy-year-old Alexander Malaska of Oldtown was sentenced Tuesday in Cumberland.

A jury convicted him in September of voluntary manslaughter in the death in March of 43-year-old Dennis Liller.

Police say the shooting stemmed from a dispute over three trees between Malaska’s house and his neighbor’s. Malaska’s son Michael allegedly cut down the trees.

Liller then went to Malaska’s house along with the neighbor’s daughter. Police say Liller and Michael Malaska got into a fistfight. That’s when Alexander Malaska fired a rifle shot that hit Liller in the upper torso.
