30 years for woman in Va. hatchet killing

A woman convicted of killing her boyfriend with a hatchet has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that 35-year-old Cheryl N. Giles pleaded guilty Thursday in Richmond Circuit Court to second-degree murder.

Giles was charged with killing 52-year-old Richard Herman Church last November in the victim’s apartment.

Prosecutor Jed Patterson says Giles hit Church repeatedly in the face and head with a hatchet. Church suffered about 20 injuries to the head.

Giles was arrested several days later at a motel.
