An Anne Arundel County man was arrested in a New York airport Tuesday morning on murder charges related to the death of a Frederick County man, who was found in his own car in early December, according to authorities.
The suspect, Michael A. Stahlnecker, 51, was arrested as he was preparing to board a flight at JFK International airport just before 6 a.m. on Tuesday. Stahlnecker was arrested on charges of first and second degree murder, first and second degree assault, reckless endangerment and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony/violent crime, according to a release from the Maryland State Police.
The victim, identified by authorities as John P. Ryan, 37, had been under investigation by Frederick County Narcotics Task Force investigators, who believed he and his associates were importing and distributing marijuana. Stahlnecker is identified as a close associate in the operation, according to authorities.
Ryan and Stahlnecker were believed to have had a meeting scheduled for Nov. 28, 2012 at a warehouse leased by Stahlnecker in Laurel. Ryan’s wife reported him missing on Nov. 29, and his body was found in the trunk of his car on Dec. 3.
A motive has not been confirmed by officials, but it is believed that Stahlnecker owed large quantities of money to multiple people, according to officials. He is being held on fugitive warrant in New York pending extradition back to Maryland.
The investigation into the case is ongoing.
