Arrest in March Frederick killing at Burger King

A man already in federal custody awaiting sentencing on immigration charges has been charged with murder in a March killing in Frederick, authorities said Friday.

Jose Reyes Mejia-Varela, 21, was charged with the March 18 killing of Jacinta “Patty” Ayala, according to the Frederick police.

He shot Ayala, an assistant manager at the Burger King in the 1300 block of E. Patrick Street, as she prepared to open the business, police said.

Mejia-Varela was in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service awaiting sentencing on charges of illegally re-entering the country after having been deported as an aggravated felon, police said.

Following federal sentencing, a warrant will be issued for the murder charge, according to police.

Mejia-Varela was charged with first-degree murder and assault and armed robbery charges in connection with the Ayala murder.
