Bank robber drops package, closing steets for nearly three hours

D.C. police shut down a block of Connecticut Avenue north of Dupont Circle for nearly three hours on Friday after authorities said a bank robber dropped a suspicious package while making his getaway.

Officer Araz Alali said the holdup occurred minutes before noon at the TD Bank in the 1700 block of Connecticut Avenue NW. He said the robber handed a teller a note demanding money and did not show a gun.

Alali said the man dropped a package on his way out, though it was not immediately clear if it was accidental or done purposely to distract police.

D.C. police called in explosives experts and shut down the block of Connecticut Avenue between R and S streets, along with a part of Florida Avenue and 20th Street.

All streets reopened at 2:45 p.m.
