Girl, 5, fatally struck by vehicle in Landover

Updated, 5:48 p.m.: A 5-year-old was fatally struck by a sport-utility vehicle in the Landover area of Prince George's County, authorities said Tuesday afternoon.

The accident occurred about 2:30 p.m. at Martin Luther King Highway and Fiji Avenue, said Cpl. Mike Rodriguez, a Prince George's police spokesman. He said the child, a girl, was transported to a nearby hospital, and the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene. Rodriguez confirmed that the girl was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The red SUV was traveling in the direction of the District on Martin Luther King Highway at the time of the accident, Rodriguez said. He said the girl was not in a crosswalk.

Rodriguez said police are investigating the circumstances of the accident.
