Brush fire breaks out in Gaithersburg

Montgomery County firefighters worked to put out a brush fire that spread through several acres in Gaithersburg on Sunday afternoon.

The fire filled about two to three acres of land in the 20200 block of Watkins Mill Road, which is near Watkins Mill High School and Great Seneca Stream Valley Park. The blaze was mostly contained as of 5 p.m., though access to the area was still difficult, fire department spokesman Scott Graham said in a tweet.

Fire departments have been on heightened alert for brush fires, given the recent dry weather and bursts of gusty winds that can quickly start and spread such blazes.
