Car crashes, burns after driver shot in D.C.

A car crashed and burst into flames after the driver was shot early Monday in the Woodridge/ Brookland area of Northeast Washington, authorities said.

The 22-year-old driver was shot about 4 a.m. in the 3400 block of 17th Street NE. The car crashed near Monroe Street, a short distance away.

Police said an off-duty D.C. firefighter who was on his way to work pulled the victim from the burning car.

He was taken to a hospital in stable condition, police said. They said the matter was under investigation.

No names were released.
