Charges for VCU student in dormitory fire

RICHMOND, Va. — A Virginia Commonwealth University student from Sterling faces charges of setting fires in a dormitory that caused an estimated $20,000 in damage.

Police tell media outlets that 22-year-old Javier A. Chavez also faces disciplinary action by the university.

Chavez is charged with a felony count of burning an occupied dwelling. He’s accused of setting fires in trashcans in bathrooms on the 12th and 18th floors at Rhoads Hall on Nov. 17.

The building was evacuated. There were no injuries.
