Police question story of 3 abducted kids

A woman may have reported falsely that her three small children were in a car that was stolen Sunday in Prince George’s County, the police said.

All three children who were reported abducted Sunday night while sitting in a car at a gas station have been accounted for, the county police said early Monday.

In addition, police said, the vehicle involved in the incident has been found in the District. It had been reported that a man took the car while a woman, believed to be the children’s mother, was pumping gas at a service station in the Seat Pleasant area.

However, police said early Monday that they were investigating the woman’s account of the incident. They said they were looking into the possibility that the woman’s report was intended to speed up efforts to find the car.

In a post on the county police blog, the police said dectives “now believe” that the woman “claimed her children were in the vehicle to obtain faster police response.”

An Amber Alert was issued in the incident.

This story has been udpated.
