A cleaning woman has pled guilty to stealing checks worth more than $30,000 while she straightened up D.C. government offices, authorities said Monday.
Yesenia E. Amaya, 19, of Hyattsville, took about 30 checks while working her evening shift cleaning the offices of the D.C. Economic and Development Regulation Center last year, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Each check had originally been made payable to the District, authorities said, but Amaya added her name as a payee and deposited the money in her own bank account. When investigators contacted Amaya, she admitted the offense.
Amaya has agreed to repay the stolen money as part of her plea agreement. She will be sentenced in July and faces six to 12 months in prison.
