Campus police at the University of Maryland at College Park are starting an effort to reduce crime through community policing.
The initiative is aimed at securing campus facilities, community policing and crime prevention and detection.
The effort involves training members of the community to become so-called “trained observers” who will report anything around campus they feel is suspicious.
Thirty-nine people were trained Wednesday morning as observer trainers and will now go on to train others.
