Court date scheduled in Md. woman’s Georgia killing

MACON, Ga. — A man charged with murder in the death of a Mercer University law school graduate from Laurel is scheduled to be in court Wednesday.

The Telegraph of Macon reports that lawyers are expected to discuss rules governing capital punishment cases and Judge S. Phillip Brown will explore potential dates for Stephen McDaniel’s arraignment on the murder charge.

McDaniel is accused of killing Lauren Giddings, a recent graduate of Mercer University’s law school, who was last seen after a night out with friends June 25. Five days later, police discovered her torso wrapped in plastic in a garbage bin beside her apartment building.

Also Wednesday, Bibb County prosecutors are expected to formally notify McDaniel of their intent to seek the death penalty.
