A District man who unleashed a hail of gunfire that killed a woman as she waited for a ride to work was sentenced to 47 years in prison Friday, authorities said.
Kerstan Leonard, 30, was convicted of first-degree murder while armed and other offenses in June in D.C. Superior Court. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, he fired at least 22 shots into a Southeast apartment building occupied by rival drug dealers late one night in December 2008.
Melody Williams, 41, was hit in the back as she tried to escape, authorities said. She was waiting for a ride to work as a night-shift nursing assistant for the elderly.
None of Leonard’s intended targets were hit, authorities said. Williams was waiting with two of her nieces, who survived their own gunshot injuries.
