A District man was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison for striking a man with a golf club, authorities announced.
Clement Newton, 38, allegedly assaulted the victim in an apartment complex parking lot in the 5200 block of 3rd Street NE on June 11.
According to court documents, the victim was trying to pull out of the parking lot shortly after 8 p.m. but Newton’s car was blocking his way. Newton, who was sitting in his car, allegedly refused to move out of the way. After several requests, authorities said, the victim allegedly approached Newton and punched him in the face.
The victim then walked a short distance away and started talking to a friend, authorities said.
While the victim had his back to him, Newton pulled a golf club out of the trunk of his car and hit the victim in the back of the head, authorities said, adding that he “used a baseball-like motion.”
The victim fell to the ground unconscious; authorities said he suffered massive head injuries. Newton put the golf club back in the trunk of his car and walked into the apartment building.
Newton pleaded guilty in July to assault with a dangerous weapon. After serving his prison term, he will be placed on three years of supervised release.
