District man indicted on charge of killing estranged girlfriend, still at large

A District man was indicted Thursday in the Feb.15 fatal shooting of his estranged girlfriend and mother of his three children, according to authorities, who continue to search for the man.

Reynard Cook, 28, was charged with with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Yolanda Stone, 30. Authorities say he shot her as she drove to the 3300 block of Alden Place NE to pick up one of the children she and Cook have in common.

Cook allegedly approached Stone, argued with her, and pulled a weapon, prosecutors said. As Stone attempted to run, Cook allegedly shot her in the head and in multiple places in her body.

Authorities say Cook was only feet from her truck — and in the presence of three children — before he shot Stone and fled, leaving the children alone. Cook also faces several counts of cruelty to children.

Stone had previously obtained a civil protection order against Cook in which she told D.C. Superior Court officials Cook had physically abused her.
