District man sentenced to nearly 38 years in prison for burglary, assault

A District man was sentenced Thursday to nearly 38 years in prison for his involvement in the burglary of a Southeast Washington apartment last year and the assault of its three residents.

D.C. Superior Court Judge Gerald Fisher sentenced Vernon Bunch, 42, to 37 years and 10 months after a jury in April convicted Bunch of first-degree burglary while armed and multiple assault charges in the March 20, 2011 burglary of an apartment in the 2700 block of Jasper Street Southeast.

According to prosecutors, Bunch removed the front door of the apartment off its hinges and wielding a crowbar, severely attacked the two men and one woman who were staying in the apartment. The victims escaped out a second-floor bedroom window. Bunch fled the apartment with about $60 and a cell phone.
