Dumfries woman charged in murder-for-hire case

Sonia Guerrero Kuske (Prince William County Police )

A Dumfries woman was arrested Monday for soliciting an undercover police officer to kill her husband for insurance money, Prince William County police said.

Sonia Guerrero Kuske, 34, of the 5200 block of Spring Branch Boulevard, is charged with solicitation to commit capital murder and attempted capital murder. She is being held without bond in Prince William.

“I’m absolutely shocked,” said Dumfries resident Andrew Lovelace, who lives a few doors down from Kuske. “I would never have thought this would have happened in my town, much less my neighborhood.”

Prince William police, along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ Northern Virginia Violent Crime Taskforce, began to investigate Kuske in February and used an undercover detective to foil her plan, Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok said.

Kuske did meet with the detective, but Perok said he could not release details about how she solicited the detective or how much money was involved. A search warrant, which was not available Tuesday, was also executed at Kuske’s residence, police said.

“This is another example of excellent police work by the Prince William police department,” Commonwealth’s Attorney Paul B. Ebert said.

Ebert said murder-for-hire cases are rare but not unheard of. If convicted, Kuske could face 20 years to life in jail on the attempted capital murder charge. For a solicitation to commit capital murder charge, Kuske could face up to 10 years, he said.

Lovelace said he didn’t know Kuske, but recognized her face when her picture was released by police. Kuske said his townhome community prides itself on being a safe, family-oriented place to live.

Ebert said Kuske has one child, who he believes is now with her husband. Ebert said he couldn’t comment further because of the pending investigation.

Kuske is scheduled to appear in court May 31.
