Dunkirk accident victim identified

The driver who died in an Oct. 15 motor vehicle accident in Dunkirk was a 19-year-old Owings man, authorities said Friday.

The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Matthew Ryan Cwiek. He was driving a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser, which caught fire after the single-vehicle accident, authorities said.

The accident happened around 7:44 a.m. in the area of Maryland Route 4 and Chaney Road, according to authorities. The Toyota was headed north on Route 4 and left the roadway before hitting a tree head-on. Speed may have contributed to the crash, authorities said.

An autopsy is pending.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call Cpl. V. Bortchevsky at 410-535-2800 or e-mail bortchvi@co.cal.md.us.
