Fairfax police officer arrested after fight

A 21-year veteran of the Fairfax County police force was charged with assault and battery after he allegedly fought with an acquaintance in Bristow last week, Prince William County police said.

Officer Brian James Sonnenberg was arrested around 8 p.m. Friday after police responded to a domestic call in the 12800 block of Noltland Castle Drive, police said. A 21-year-old man told officers he got into a verbal altercation with Sonnenberg that escalated into a fight, police said.

The 21-year-old suffered minor injuries, police said.

Sonnenberg, who is stationed at the Mason District station, has been relieved of duty pending an investigation, said Officer Don Gotthardt, a Fairfax County police spokesman.
