The Falls Church police announced he will retire in the middle of November after a 37 year career with the city’s police force, according to officials.
Colonel Harry Reitze has served as chief since 2007 and got his start with the department as a patrol officer in 1975, officials said.
“Harry has been a strong leader for the police department and the city as a whole,” said City Manager Wyatt Shields. “He has fostered a culture in which the men and women who serve in the Department want to be the best, period.”
Over his years with the department, Reitze has overseen the department’s service and operations divisions and commander of special operations. He has received numerous awards, including two commendations for bravery and actions above and beyond the call of duty.
City officials said a successor will be appointed after Reitze retires.
