Felony charges for 2 Va. women after newborn found dead

WYTHEVILLE, Va. — A grand jury has indicted a Wythe County woman and her daughter in the death of a newborn whose body was found in a cave.

Media outlets report 60-year-old Twila Jean Meadows is charged with felony child endangerment and concealing a body. Her daughter, 21-year-old Ashley April Meadows, is charged with felony child endangerment.

The grand jury issued the indictments Tuesday.

The women testified at an August hearing that Ashley Meadows gave birth in their home on Jan. 16. They said the infant girl was born dead. Twila Meadows said she later hid the body in a cave without her daughter’s knowledge.

A medical examiner’s report shows the baby was born alive, but died sometime after that.

Both women are scheduled to enter pleas later this year.
