Fine for Va. woman in crash that killed off-duty officer

RICHMOND, Va. — A judge says a Henrico County woman wasn’t driving recklessly when her SUV hit and killed an off-duty police officer riding his motorcycle.

Media outlets report that Henrico General District Court Judge Archer L. Yeats III found Ann Y. Key guilty of failure to yield on Thursday.

The 59-year-old Crown Prince Circle resident originally was charged with reckless driving.

Yeatts said testimony indicated that another vehicle obstructed Key’s view when she pulled out of a shopping center and her SUV hit a motorcycle operated by Thomas P. Berry Jr. on July 12. Berry died at a local hospital.

The 35-year-old Berry was an eight-year veteran of the Henrico County police force.

Yeatts ordered Key to pay a $250 fine.
